ANTHOPHILIA (from 2023)
‘Anthophilia’ is the love of flowers, from the Greek ‘anthos’ which means flower, and ‘philia’, or love. I’ve always loved flowers - some more than others - but until now I haven’t painted many of them. However, inspired by our magnificent Gymea Lily, and motivated by the result I achieved with this striking flower, I made up my mind to start this new series.

This painting was awarded ‘Commended’ at the CASS ‘Art at The Royal’ exhibition (2024). Judge’s comments: Beautiful image of a possibly complicated subject. Clever use of watercolour, illustrating the vibrancy of the medium.
It was also awarded ‘Very Highly Commended’ at the Annual Open Awards Exhibition of the Drummoyne Art Society (2025). Judge’s comments: It is easy and satisfying to engage in this painting. I loved the gradations in the colour red and I also liked the way the artist painted a green border around the perimeter of the painting but allowed the lily to come forward of that, thereby reinforcing a strong 3-D effect (Ken Knight)
