THOSE AWFUL RAINY DAYS

August 10, 2025

I spoke too soon last month. Today should have been one of those gorgeous winter days (it’s the City2Surf fun run – a day that’s almost guaranteed to be perfect!), but instead the rain that we’ve had so much of these past couple of weeks is continuing to fall. Just about every day, I head out twice for a walk with my dog, and the wet days can be pretty trying. Spring, however, is just a few weeks away, and the promise of the beauty (the sun and the new life) that always comes with Spring on those walks with Izzi is definitely something I’m looking forward to.

That and the never-ending opportunities to show my paintings! The one pictured above is a recent sale, from an image captured a while ago in Roseville, just before lunch with an old friend who’d been visiting from WA.

There are, as always, plenty of exhibitions on the horizon, but the one I’m most excited about is coming up in November, when I’ll be one of six artists exhibiting at The Garden Gallery in Sydney’s Botanic Gardens. Our exhibition is to be called ‘Out Back’, something that means something different to each of us, so you’re going to see a wide variety of artistic interpretations if you get along to see it ...

Maybe it’s the once-treasured Aussie backyard, that area out the back of every quarter-acre block where families and friends would gather to enjoy a barbecue, play cricket, kick a ball with the dog, or perhaps cool off under the sprinkler or on the waterslide on a hot summer’s day? Or maybe it’s acreage and there’s a pool, as well as a swing beneath magnificent trees. Perhaps, in your mind, it stretches much further afield, to the Outback, where homesteads and abandoned structures give character to a striking landscape; where lighthouses or churches call out to you to explore?

You’ll have to wait and see! In the meantime, there’s the following:

‘Small Packages’, Sherbrooke Art Gallery, 62 Monbulk Rd, Belgrave (Vic.), until Saturday 23 August

Northern Beaches Art Society’s Annual Awards Exhibition, The Tramshed Community Arts Centre, 1395a Pittwater Road, Narrabeen (NSW), from Wednesday 1 to Tuesday 7 October

Drummoyne Art Society’s Members’ Exhibition, Drummoyne Civic Hall, cnr Lyons Rd and Marlborough St, Drummoyne, from Friday 3 to Sunday 12 October

Australian Society of Miniature Art’s Annual Awards Exhibition, Ewart Gallery, Willoughby Arts Centre, 33 Laurel Street, Willoughby (NSW), from Friday 24 October to Sunday 9 November

‘Out Back’ at The Garden Gallery, Sydney Botanic Gardens, Mrs Macquaries Road, Sydney, from Wednesday 12 to Sunday 23 November

 Until next month!
